Cheese is one of the most popular foods in Germany. Most people love cheese and can hardly imagine life without their favorite product.

But do people with a histamine intolerance now have to do without cheese completely?

All cheeses go through a ripening process during which the histamine content in the cheese increases.

The total duration of the ripening period already mentioned is therefore decisive when selecting the type of cheese. The longer the ripening period, the greater the histamine content in the respective type of cheese. In the case of histamine intolerance, caution is advised here, because many types of cheese undergo a very long ripening process and have a correspondingly high histamine content.

The simple rule is that the younger a cheese is, the less histamine it contains and, accordingly, the more suitable it is for people with histamine intolerance.

Below we have listed for you some low histamine cheeses:

- Cream cheese

- Grainy cream cheese

- Butter cheese

- Young Gouda

- Sheep cream cheese

- Goat cheese

- Ricotta

- Curd

- Mozarella

- Unripened camembert

Especially much histamine is in long matured cheeses, which you should avoid accordingly:

- Parmesan

- Mountain cheese

- Brie

- Harz cheese

- Processed cheese

- Emmental

- Precious mushroom cheese

- Pecorino

- Sheep hard cheese

- Blue cheese

- Red smear cheese

- Cheddar

- Quargel

Another alternative, especially to longer aged hard cheeses, are plant-based cheese alternatives.

Even low-histamine, young cheeses could be intolerable if they contain additives. Here are a few ingredients used in various cheeses that you should avoid because they are high in histamine:

  • Locust bean gum
  • Carrageenan
  • Citric acid

When buying cheese, always make sure that you choose young cheeses in small quantities, so that the cheese does not remain in your refrigerator for too long. In addition, you should make sure that your cheese is always hermetically sealed to prevent unnecessary histamine formation during storage. Avoid all mature cheeses and cheeses that contain the strong histamine additives mentioned above.

If you use the TIOLI PRO version of our app, the app will warn you if a product contains these ingredients, and you can always be sure that you are buying only low-histamine products.

Fructose intolerance - symptoms, diagnosis & treatment

Fructose intolerance is a rare genetic disorder that affects the way the body processes fructose, a type of sugar found in many foods and beverages. The disorder is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme aldolase B, which is needed to break down fructose in the liver. Symptoms of fructose intolerance include abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and nausea. Treatment for fructose intolerance includes a strict low-fructose diet and, in some cases, vitamin and mineral supplements and medication.

Painkillers for histamine intolerance

Many people with histamine intolerance are initially unaware that many painkillers are also unsuitable. This is because most painkillers contain so-called histamine liberators. These are substances that release the body's own histamine in mast cells. DAO blockers can also be a problem. DAO is the main degradation pathway in the intestine. Certain substances can inhibit DAO enzyme activity by their presence in the body. As you can see, the question "Which painkillers for histamine intolerance?" is not so easy to answer. On the one hand, it is necessary to check whether the active ingredient is tolerated. On the other hand, it is also necessary to check which excipients are contained in the medication.
