Lactose, fructose, gluten, histamine,... - nowadays there are more and more people suffering from food intolerances. The percentage affected by lactose intolerance alone has almost doubled from 2013 to 2016 . A particular increase can be seen in the age group between 18 and 25 years. 38% in this age group report reacting to various foods. In 2018, a total of 30 % of women and 20 % of men stated in a survey that they could not tolerate certain foods.

The nature and extent of the reactions vary from person to person. Possible symptoms are, for example, osmotic diarrhea and abdominal cramps (lactose intolerance), ravenous appetite and depressive moods (fructose intolerance) or sneezing fits, bronchial asthma, migraine and even cardiac arrhythmias (histamine intolerance).

In this context, a study by the Schwenninger health insurance company highlighted the main everyday problems faced by those affected. Of those surveyed with food intolerances, 45% said they felt restricted when shopping, cooking or eating out. In addition, 61% of these individuals complained of problems in finding competent support and emphasized the lack of specialized physicians. In addition, according to a survey by pronova BKK, 34 % of participants prefer to use products they already know, so they rarely try new products.

At TIOLI, we have therefore made it our mission to make life easier for people with food intolerances.

If you're not sure which products are suitable for your food intolerances, simply scan the barcode with your TIOLI app and find out if other people with the same intolerances as you have tolerated this product and if the product contains ingredients that are incompatible for you.

Fructose intolerance - symptoms, diagnosis & treatment

Fructose intolerance is a rare genetic disorder that affects the way the body processes fructose, a type of sugar found in many foods and beverages. The disorder is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme aldolase B, which is needed to break down fructose in the liver. Symptoms of fructose intolerance include abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and nausea. Treatment for fructose intolerance includes a strict low-fructose diet and, in some cases, vitamin and mineral supplements and medication.

Painkillers for histamine intolerance

Many people with histamine intolerance are initially unaware that many painkillers are also unsuitable. This is because most painkillers contain so-called histamine liberators. These are substances that release the body's own histamine in mast cells. DAO blockers can also be a problem. DAO is the main degradation pathway in the intestine. Certain substances can inhibit DAO enzyme activity by their presence in the body. As you can see, the question "Which painkillers for histamine intolerance?" is not so easy to answer. On the one hand, it is necessary to check whether the active ingredient is tolerated. On the other hand, it is also necessary to check which excipients are contained in the medication.
