You avoid milk and are looking for an alternative? There's a lot to be said for plant-based milk substitutes. But beware, many of these products contain incompatible ingredients.

Today we show you which milk alternatives are suitable for people with histamine intolerance, but also which histamine-containing additives are used very often and you should avoid them.

There are many milk substitutes on the market. All milk substitutes are lactose-free, but not all are gluten-free.

NOT WELL TOLERATED ME SUBSTITUTE PRODUCTS:

- Soy drink

- Lupin drink

- Pea drink

These milk substitutes are not suitable for people with histamine intolerance due to their high histamine content.

WELL TOLERATED LOW HISTAMINE MILK SUBSTITUTES:

- Oat drink

Oats are a low-histamine but gluten-containing cereal. Compared to the other plant drinks, oat drinks have the best life cycle assessment [1]. The disadvantage of oat drink is that it is quite a caloric drink due to its sugar content and also relatively low in nutrients and proteins.

- Almond drink

Not all people with histamine intolerance can consume almonds. Almonds are a "1" on the SIGHI list. This means they are moderately tolerated, could cause mild symptoms, but occasional consumption of small amounts is often tolerated.

The tolerance ratings of users with histamine intolerance of our app show that the majority tolerates almonds well. Almond drink offers plenty of trace elements, vitamins and relatively little fat.

- Rice drink

Rice drink is one of the most popular milk alternatives for people with allergies and intolerances. It is gluten-free and contains very little histamine, making it suitable for a low-histamine diet. Unfortunately, the downside of rice milk is that it is quite high in calories and low in nutrients.

- Hemp drink

Hemp drinks are comparatively new milk alternatives on the market. They are very popular because they contain hardly any unhealthy fats, but valuable omega-3 fatty acids and vegetable protein. In addition, hemp is well tolerated by histamine intolerance.

- Spelt drink

Spelt, like wheat, has a very high gluten content. On the other hand, spelt is a very well tolerated food for histamine intolerance. Spelt drinks contain very little fat compared to cow's milk, but also a very low protein content.

INCOMPATIBLE HISTAMINE-CONTAINING ADDITIVES IN DAIRY ALTERNATIVES:

Be careful when choosing plant-based milk alternatives. Many contain undesirable histamine-containing additives. The best products are organic with few ingredients. Undesirable ingredients in plant-based milk alternatives include the following:

- Sunflower oil or sunflower lecithin

- Soy

- Locust bean gum

- Riboflavin

- Algae

- Carrageenan

If you use the TIOLI PRO version of our app, the app will warn you if a product contains these ingredients, and you can always be sure that you are buying only low-histamine products.

Fructose intolerance - symptoms, diagnosis & treatment

Fructose intolerance is a rare genetic disorder that affects the way the body processes fructose, a type of sugar found in many foods and beverages. The disorder is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme aldolase B, which is needed to break down fructose in the liver. Symptoms of fructose intolerance include abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and nausea. Treatment for fructose intolerance includes a strict low-fructose diet and, in some cases, vitamin and mineral supplements and medication.

Painkillers for histamine intolerance

Many people with histamine intolerance are initially unaware that many painkillers are also unsuitable. This is because most painkillers contain so-called histamine liberators. These are substances that release the body's own histamine in mast cells. DAO blockers can also be a problem. DAO is the main degradation pathway in the intestine. Certain substances can inhibit DAO enzyme activity by their presence in the body. As you can see, the question "Which painkillers for histamine intolerance?" is not so easy to answer. On the one hand, it is necessary to check whether the active ingredient is tolerated. On the other hand, it is also necessary to check which excipients are contained in the medication.
